“We’re in the middle of a silent epidemic of male suicide”
-Professor Dan Bilsker (Vancouver University)
As we approach International Men’s Day on Sunday November 19th, it’s crucial to recognize this day’s significance in highlighting issues affecting men and boys. This year, the theme is on a particularly pressing issue: “Zero Male Suicides”.
The data on male suicide rates globally are alarming, showing a silent pandemic that needs urgent attention.
π THE DATA
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global suicide rate is 10.5 per 100,000 population. But the rate of male suicide is much higher than across geographies.
Suicide rate per 100,000 of population by continent:
- Worldwide: Male 15.0, Female 6.0
- Africa: Male 9.8, Female 6.0
- Asia: Male 12.9, Female 7.6
- Europe: Male 18.2, Female 5.4
- North America: Male 17.2, Female 4.5
- Oceana: Male 14.6, Female 5.0
- South America: Male 7.5, Female 2.8
π€ THE WORKPLACE – WHAT CAN WE DO?
- As Employers: Foster an inclusive environment where conversations about mental health are normalized.
- As Colleagues: Be observant and compassionate. Small gestures like checking in with colleagues who have gone quiet can make a difference.
- As Leaders: Implement mental health programs. Prioritize well-being and create safe spaces for discussions on mental health challenges.
- All of Us: Educate ourselves about the mental health challenges faced by men/boys. Understanding is the first step towards support.
π THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
βWhy are we talking only about menβs mental health and suicides?β
To be clear, ALL suicide is tragic – regardless of gender. Virtually all of the advice here applies equally across women, men, and transgender colleagues. The focus on men’s suicide is due to the data and the focus in November on men’s health.
Let’s unite in efforts to remove stigma and empower all genders facing mental health challenges.
